It was designed by the Des Moines architectural firm of Proudfoot, Bird and Rawson. The six-story brick structure rises above the ground. The hotel, which was completed in 1916, was built by a group of Ottumwa businessmen who believed the city needed a luxury-class hotel. The exterior of the building is covered in dark brown brick and features classical details in terra cotta.
